Matiatia Malt Beer

Malty - The Big Beast

Matiatia Malt is our way of bringing you something a little larger than the average brew. Our Dark Ale gives you the flavour of MALT. Our Wheat Beer gives you the flavour of YEAST. Baroona Original gives you the flavour of HOPS.

Malty gives you the flavour of LOTS AND LOTS OF EVERYTHING.

Oh, and did we mention it weighs in at 7.2% alcohol?

Well it does.

So what exactly is it? Well to tell the honest truth I haven’t completely decided yet. It started out some years ago as a Belgian style Abbey Ale, brewed during Winter as a one off special. At the time there was no plan to keep making it. But it had a certain appeal and the demand for it stayed constant. So we kept brewing it but with a certain flexibility in our approach. Over the years we’ve changed the hops, the yeast, the type of malt used. The colour has changed from deep red to brown, to dark gold. It is in fact still a work in progress.

And why not? After all, our malt and hop supply keeps developing with new flavours and aromas so Matiatia Malt keeps changing with them. Part of this beer’s appeal lies in the way it evolves. Wine drinkers appreciate the way that their favourite vineyard’s products change with each passing year. Malty does something similar for the true Beer Hunter. The other three brews we offer have had their recipes set down to the last detail and we don’t mess with those. They will taste the same next year as they did this year. But keep coming back and Malty will always find a new way to surprise and delight you.

But, this much we can say with certainty; Matiatia Malt is the after dinner beer. The beer you want with strong cheese or a rich dessert. It is full bodied and very aromatic. It has a personality and zest to match the people that drink it. It is a beer to be enjoyed in modest quantities by folks who like everything in life to come with that little bit extra.

And did we mention that it is 7.2% alcohol?

We did? Good.
Because this is the point where we are supposed to go on and on and on about how you have to ‘drink responsibly’ and how alcohol makes you behave badly if you drink too much of it and how your kids will grown an extra head and get taken off you by social workers if you don’t watch out and your Mum will be upset that you spend your leisure time drinking and having fun instead of growing up and getting a proper career and marrying that nice girl you used to date back in college and your living room carpet ends up with horrible stains that won’t come out even with one of those whirring things you have to hire from the supermarket and then you go and wreck the car and the Magistrate gives you a stern lecture and a hefty fine and that’s the LAST thing you need what with your liver exploding and having to be replaced and the neighbours shouting at you just because you had a couple of beers and won’t turn the stereo down even though it’s only half past eight in the evening and you are just getting to the good bit on side four of The Wall by Pink Floyd where Dave Gilmour really lets it all hang out on the guitar solo at the end of Comfortably Numb making it sound like he’s tearing his own heart out and how’s a spirited person supposed to listen to THAT at less than full volume eh?

Blimey. Does it ever occur to you that we live in arse numbingly dreary times? So many warning labels on stuff that there’s hardly any room left to tell you about the nice bits.

So I know we are supposed to do all of that and try and keep you safe from yourselves, but you know what? We are not going to. Our customers are sensible grown ups already and don’t need us adding yet another dreary, pious lecture to the ones they already get every single day.

What we say is; live life to the full. Drink beer, be happy, think delightful nonsense, eat tasty meals, dance exuberantly with people you find cute, laugh out loud from time to time for no other reason than it’s great to be alive and above all, keep doing all those things and more until you are at least ninety five, if not older.

And, lastly, if you can do all that, try and help those around you to do the same.
